'Love Stonehouse'
Every year, Union Street in Plymouth comes alive as people gather to celebrate the spirit of their neighbourhood. Once known for its vibrant nightlife, music halls, and clubs, the area has faced decades of post‑war decline, leaving many buildings empty and falling into disrepair. Today, local residents, community groups, and social enterprises are reclaiming the street — challenging absentee corporate landlords, bringing buildings back into community ownership, and breathing life into a once bustling place.
The Union Street Party, organised by Nudge Community Builders, is a joyful expression of that movement: a day when the street is taken back by the people who live, work, and care here.
For this photo series, I invited 40 people to write something they love about Stonehouse and its community. The portraits celebrate the people who make this neighbourhood what it is — its diversity, its resilience, and the power that emerges when a community comes together to take action.
